What's new in BSCW 4.0
Version 4.0 of the BSCW Shared Workspace system provides several new
features and enhancements as described below.
Please note that some of the features are only available
in the "advanced" or "expert" mode, i.e., you may have
to change your mode to get access to these features.

Features for the end user
|
New Interface
|
The user interface of BSCW has been totally revised. There is now a
JavaScript interface which is much "cleaner" than the previous one.
In particular, the JavaScript interface uses pop-up menus so the number
of action buttons in the interface has been reduced significantly.
Usage of the JavaScript interface requires at least Netscape Navigator
Version 4 or MS Internet Explorer Version 4 (Version 5 for MacIntosh). In
addition, of course, you must enable JavaScript in your browser settings.
As an alternative for users which cannot make use of the JavaScript
interface, there exists also a pure HTML interface. Whenever possible,
however, we recommend the usage of the JavaScript interface.

Roles
|
BSCW supports now the concept of roles. Roles are particularly used to
associate access rights with them. The previous features for specifying
access rights have been removed completely. If you have specified access
right in your workspaces in previous versions which are different from
the default setting, please check the access
rights settings since they may have been changed during the upgrade
process to Version 4.

Document Factory
|
The Document Factory facilitates a comfortable management of document
sets which need to be continually revised and periodically published.
Based on hierarchically structured templates, documents within such document
sets can be automatically created by an evaluation process using the
templates. The Document Factory is particularly useful for - but not
restricted to - Web Site management.

Project Flow
|
The new Project Flow component enables project managers to plan the time
flow of a project. In this context, a project is considered to consist
out of several processes which need a particular amount of time to be
executed.

New Calendar
|
The old calendar component has been replaced by a new calendar which
provides different views (year, months, week, day) conforming with the
usual "look-and-feel" of calendars. It is now possible
to enter appointments directly into the calendar (not only indirectly
via the specification of "Meetings" as in the previous BSCW versions).
In addition to the personal calendar of each user, calendars can be
created within folders and may then be used as a joint calendar for a
group of users (group calendar).

And more ...

In addition, there are numerous minor enhancements of the functionality of
the BSCW system.

Features for system administrators

for users. More details can be found in the Admininistrator Manual.
