3.5 Personal objects and the public space

In BSCW, every user has direct access to the public space and a number of personal objects, the icons of which are shown in the instant access bar in the upper right hand corner of the Web-based user interface. The instant access bar is present in each of your folder pages.

The personal objects cannot be shared with other users of your BSCW server.

home folder  Home folder
public space  Public space
clipboard  Clipboard
trash  Trash
address book  Address book
calendar  Calendar
bookmarks  Bookmarks
task list  Task list
briefcase  Briefcase

home folder  Your home folder is your personal workspace that may only be accessed by yourself and that contains all folders which you have created and all workspaces where you have been invited as a member. When you click your home folder icon from within other personal objects, you return to the workspace that you viewed last; clicking again on the home folder icon brings you indeed to your home folder.

public space  The public space represents that part of BSCW which is accessible by everyone without any access control. Click this icon to anonymously access the public part of your BSCW server without terminating your current session under your own user name. This is especially useful when you moderate a workspace with public access. You may then check very quickly how the public part of the workspace looks like from the perspective of an anonymous user in the World-Wide Web (see 4.7.6).

address book  The address book is used mainly to invite new members to your workspaces (see 4.5.2).

calendar  The calendar helps you manage your appointments. In addition to this personal calendar, BSCW offers group calendars to support cooperation in arbitrary workspaces. These group calendars are stored in the respective workspaces (see 5).

bookmarks  Bookmarks offer quick access to important objects. This personal data area contains those bookmarks that you have collected (see 4.12).

task list  This personal data area contains the tasks that you are to carry out (includes proper tasks, flow folders and project processes). The icon changes its appearance if there are tasks for you to carry out (see 8.3.3.6).

briefcase  The briefcase contains documents you want to have synchronized with their counterparts on your local computer (see 9.6).

Clipboard and trash are described in more detail in the following two subsections.
