customer order satisfaction) and their main support processes (marketing,
material processes, etc.). The course covers topics which are deemed relevant
for this purpose, including
The course is intended as a prerequisite for more specialized Tik-86 courses, in particular the seminars .160/.161, but also for more general audience interested in industrial applications of information technology. |
Prerequisites | Necessary prerequisites include core courses of the Computer Science curriculum, in particular, Tik-76.143, and Tik-76.601. Also principles of object orientation such as given by the course Tik-76.137 or equivalent are recommended. Basic understanding on industrial operations management such as given by TU-22.101 or equivalent is another necessary prerequisite. |
Teachers | The course is led by Prof. Martti Mäntylä and M.Sc. Mervi Ranta (A238, e-mail Mervi.Ranta@hut.fi). The teaching assistant is Paavo Kotinurmi (A243, e-mail Paavo.Kotinurmi@hut.fi). Course personnel can also be contacted vie the course mail address tik86141@cs.hut.fi. |

The lectures on the course consist of a core sequence given by Prof. Mäntylä and DI Ranta. In the schedule, these include those lectures where no other speaker is specified. The core lectures are complemented by invited lectures concentrating on specific issues, concepts, methods, or tools relevant for enterprise systems integration and given by chosen experts in the respective fields. Apart from lectures, seminar sessions will be scheduled. These consist of short presentations given by the participants of the course and provide an opportunity to discuss the subject matter of the course in a more interactive fashion. Seminar material consists of recent published papers and articles or material available through WWW. The provisional schedule of lectures and seminar sessions can be found here. The first exam based on this version of the course will be given Thu 14.12 16-19 in lecture hall L (main building). Check wwwtopi for possible changes. |

The text is some 330 pages long and contains material not included in the course requirements. There will be a separate reading guide published to help in preparing for the exam. The material has been upgraded and changed from older course handouts (from 1997-1999), but it is possible to manage with older notes if you have followed the lectures. Seminar material consists of WWW-links and selected recent literature that will be available from the course assistant. Alternatively, students are requested to search relevant material from the WWW on a given theme or topic. The WWW links provided here give several starting points. |
Passing | The written exam can give a maximum grade of 4. Various other activities give extra activity points. These include:
A minimum of two activity points are needed to pass the course, four activity points will increase a passed exam grade by one (i.e. 1 -> 2, 2 -> 3, 3 -> 4, 4 -> 5). Please observe that only a limited number of practical assignment topics will be available. For presentations and practical assignment reports, Web pages in English must be made consisting summary of the work done and references to material used in presentation. Those reports not intended for distribution (lecture notes, excursion reports) can be written in any language sufficiently understood the teachers (Finnish, Swedish, English, German). |
Links | A collection of links related to topics of the course and intended
as material for seminars and practical assignments is given here.
