Whatever Happened to "Tik-86.140 Integration of CIM Systems"?

If you are trying to find information on the course Tik-86.140 Integration of CIM Systems relax; this is it. The official name of the course still remains Integration of CIM Systems, and if you pass the course, that name will appear in your study records. For all official purposes, this course is equivalent with the older course with the same code.

The new name is chosen to indicate the direction of evolution of the course: towards concepts, issues, methods, and techniques with are relevant for wide-scale application of information technology in an industrial enterprise over and beyond purely manufacturing applications. By the way, I'm still contemplating on the alternative name Enterprise Systems Integration.

The Objective of the Course

The objective of the course is to give an overall view of the use of information technology in industrial enterprises, with emphasis on the use of computing in various product processes (new product development, customer order satisfaction) and their main support processes (marketing, material processes, etc.). The course covers topics which are deemed relevant for this purpose, including The course is intended as a prerequisite for more specialised Tik-86 courses, in particular the seminars .160/.161, but also for more general audience interested in industrial applications of information technology.

Prerequisites

Necessary prerequisites include core courses of the Computer Science curriculum, in particular Tik-76.122, Tik-76.137 and (preferably) Tik-76.143. Basic understanding on industrial operations management such as given by TU-22.105 or equivalent is also recommended.

The core lectures are complemented by invited lectures concentrating on specific issues, concepts, methods, or tools relevant for enterprise systems integration and given by chosen experts in the respective fields.

Apart from lectures, seminar sessions will be scheduled. These consist of short presentations given by the participants of the course and provide an opportunity to discuss the subject matter of the course in a more interactive fashion. Seminar material consists of recent published papers and articles or material available through WWW.

The written exam can give a maximum grade of 4. Various other activities give extra activity points. These include: A minimum of two activity points are needed to pass the course, four activity points will increase a passed exam grade by one (i.e. 1 -> 2, 2 -> 3, 3 -> 4, 4 -> 5). Please observe that only a limited number of practical assignment topics will be available.

For article summaries and practical assignment reports, Web pages in English are strongly recommended so that they can be made available to other students through a report link page. Those reports not intended for distribution (lecture notes, excursion reports) can be written in any language sufficiently understood the teachers (Finnish, Swedish, English, German).
