 Bio
Mikko Rinne received his M.Sc. degree in 1996 from Helsinki University of Technology and Ph.D. degree in 2017 from Aalto University. M.Sc. subjects were Information Science (incl. digital filters, image processing, neural networks), graphic technology (digital image processing), musicology (subject from Helsinki University). Master's thesis on "Fast Random Access Method for a CDMA System" prepared for Nokia Research Center. He worked for Nokia Wireless Systems Research 1995-2010, latest as the program manager for LTE research and standardisation. He participated the ACTS FRAMES research project in 1997, ETSI SMG2 L23 Expert Group in 1998, and 3GPP standardization as the vice chairman of TSG-RAN WG2 (radio interface protocols) from 1999 to 2001.

Research   Finalized his Ph.D. thesis on "Event Processing Using Semantic Web Technologies". This involved publish / subscribe, complex event processing, event-based modeling, event ontologies, linked open data, semantic web, RDF, SPARQL, Rete-networks. During his Ph.D. studies he was active also in the following research tasks:
  • INSTANS (Incremental eNgine for STANding Sparql): A platform for incremental matching of SPARQL queries and update rules against RDF data based on the RETE algorithm. His main tasks involved the development and evaluation of SPARQL query networks to handle various event processing tasks, including rule-based reasoning.
  • SPIRE (Smart Parking for Intelligent Real-Estate): Software architecture design, requirements management and specification development for the first version of the parking information service. He also coded the server-side and made enhancements to the Android mobile client application. The applicability of crowdsensing in determining availability of parking in the absence of infrastructure sensors was considered and resulted in a publication.
  • TrafficSense: Aims to anticipate people’s moves and assist them with cloud data to save time and energy in traffic. His main contributions are in concept design, software architecture design, open traffic data sources, server and Android mobile client coding.
  • Spaceify: Development of a smart space package for offices and events combining large public interfaces with personal connected devices and indoor positioning. He contributed in concept design and programming of the indoor positioning system.
